Excerpt from A Geographical ReaderThe result of numerous experiments has shown that the ability to read may be acquired incidentally while the attention is primarily directed to some subject of thought. The philosophy that explains this result also indicates the general method to be pursued. At each stage of development such subject-matter is to be brought before the learner as constitutes the best aliment for the mind's growth at the time, and, when books are used, this subject-matter is to be presented in an attractive literary form. The food should be palatable as well as nutritious. In the processes of receiving, assimilating, and expressing the thoughts contained in these literary productions, pupils, without direct and conscious effort, learn to read, to write, and to spell, and to tell what they have learned both orally and in writing. It is of prime moment that reading exercises should be adapted to the condition of the pupil's mind at each period of growth; that the subject-matter should be both intelligible and interesting; and that the modes of expression be such as will constitute appropriate models of style, and will awaken sensibilities in the direction of literary excellence.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
